Re-live bits of the history of Arctic Norway

Get to know up close and personal a few of the countless number of cultural monuments, present even nowadays, on the south coast of the Varanger fjord. During this activity, you're in for cultural remains in the landscape, mythical sites, along with stories of people who have lived here for over a thousand years. See how they left their marks on the landscape and find out what story they've got to tell! This activity is based on the booklet "Cultural Remains in Varanger", written by Mrs. Ingjerd Tjelle.

Varanger has to show way more than only its amazing beautiful landscapes, dominated by the serene coast, birch woods and a lunar-like territory towards the north-east. It is also characterized by the presence of many monuments, represented by cultural remains that have marked this landscape, by mythical sites and by thousands of year old stories of people who have inhabited these places since the Stone Age.

Three routes are possible to choose from:

Map of the route

 ROUTE 1  Vads°-Mortensnes-Krampenes

See the history of this region with your own eyes: starting from the Mortensnes Cultural Heritage site, which is one of the richest of such sites in the whole of Scandinavia.

Driving further eastwards, we will make a second stop where you will learn the stories of a Sacred Mountain and what is hidden inside, as well as hear legends concerning natural stone formations, which you will all get to see.

Continuing through Vadsø, we will spot the cultural monuments preserved in the terrain on the Vadsøya island and in the town.

On our way to Ekkerøy, we will spot remains that will help us understand the impact of the Second World War on Varanger. We'll then continue our route through Ekker°y, where you will hear another story or two, and then towards Vardø, while seeing more of our region's past with your own eyes.

 ROUTE 2  Vadsø-Vardø

Starting from Vadsø, we will spot the cultural monuments preserved in the terrain on the Vadsøya island, and in the town.

On our way to Ekkerøy, we will spot remains that will help us understand the impact of the Second World War on Varanger. We'll then continue our route through Ekker°y, where you will hear another story or two, and then towards Vardø, while seeing more of our region's past with your own eyes.

On our last stop in Vardø, you will hear the story of the witches who once inhabited these places, you will see the place where they were believed to hold their ceremonies, as well as the impressive Steilneset Memorial, erected on the site where they were executed.

 ROUTE 3  Vadsø-Vardø-Hamningberg

In summertime, when the road to the colourful village of Hamningberg is open, it is possible to optionally extend Route 2 to this region. We'll start by spotting places connected to the espionage activity during the Second World War, as well as other locations once used as places of sacrifice.

Feel on your own skin what's it like to take the road to the world's end, as the lunar resembling landscape makes it feel like. ...But is it really the world's end here? Why not find out for yourself?

And to immerse yourself even more in our beautiful region, take a look at our other road trips to the east and west of the National Tourist Route of Varanger, as well as the guided walking tours of Vads° and Vard°.
